There is a swelling tide of hatred and far right hostility being directed at British citizens right now. Anyone the neo-Nazi supporters of groups like the English Defence League and Britain First define as not English enough or not white enough is at risk from these ‘fascists without a clue’. Bouyed up by their imagined vindication brought about by Brexit (which in reality had nothing to do with race or skin colour) they’re making the UK an altogether more dangerous and hostile place to live.

That’s why the more liberal majority of Brits must speak out and challenge this narrow-minded racism whenever we see it. It’s one thing to wear a safety pin. I have mine on all the time. But that in itself is of little value without a commitment to act. As Archbishop Desmond Tutu famously stated

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.”
